John Boyega resigns from Jo Malone ambassador role over Chinese ad
No PC or woke in Asia. They like fair skin in that part of the world. Dark skin implies you work as labourers in the field and also that applies to the Indian caste system and the untouchables

Take as many knees as you like that won't change. The bloke who resigned should recognise other peoples culture and not try and force changes on them

Waiting on a contract and then get of this madness soon

Or.

It doesn't sit well with him, He resigns. They apologise and run the campaign anyway

The World keeps turning and no one dies over it.

It does seem like the bloke has an enormous chip on his shoulder.

Up to him really isn’t it? They asked him to be an ‘ambassador’ and he made a sort of personal advert relating to his experiences, which they then decided to replace with a Chinese person for their advert

I can see why he’s pissed - and fair play to him for quitting when he could just ignore it and carry on taking the money

The reality is they do not find dark skin attractive they buy whitening creams for their faces and keep out of the sun

The only replaced him for the Chinese market, didn't they? Star Wars isn't big in China at all, so he's probably quite unknown there. Liu Haoran, the guy who replaced him, is a much bigger star.

Re: John Boyega resigns from Jo Malone ambassador role over Chinese ad
They did replace him as they do not find dark skin attractive

67 is correct in this - i's a deeply held cultural belief in that part of the world (every time countries try to regulate "skin whiteners (or bleachers)), big pharma are straight on the case defending an enormous revenue stream.

The problem with the west is that it can no longer tell the difference between "different" & "wrong" when it comes to local culture, traditions & histories.

Many have difficulty accepting a/their (country's) past was different from how it is today.

The Chinese don't know how lucky they are being born yellow; they can get away easily with all sorts of shit that the superiorly more intelligent and educated white man can't.

Re: John Boyega resigns from Jo Malone ambassador role over Chinese ad

Wasn't disputing that. It isn't the only reality though. Another reality is that John Boyega wasn't up for being replaced and due to another race finding dark skin less desirable (Can we run to attractive and indicative of wealth/value) so he resigned on principle instead of just quielt accepting it and taking a pay day.

Those who don't like will call chip

Those who do will call principles

Those without a side will call for a frothy pint of Bothered.

Re: John Boyega resigns from Jo Malone ambassador role over Chinese ad
This sounds like a situation where everybody has done the right thing to me.

The chinese don't know who Boyega is (neither do I, as it happens) so why would they be expected to be influenced by him into buying something? They're also turned on by pale skin tones and buy productsto lighten their skin. How is this any worse than caucasians buying tanning products?

Jo Malone didn't want to waste money on a marketing campaign that wouldn't work because the target audience don't know who the bloke is. So they replaced him with a local celebrity.

John Boyega (who he?) stands on his principles (rightly or wrongly he perceives it as a racist slight) and resigns and furthermore doesn't take their shilling. Good bloke. Whoever he is.

Or am I missing something?

I have decided to step down as Jo Malone's global ambassador. When I joined the brand as their first male global ambassador last year, I created the short film we used to launch the campaign. It won the Fragrance Foundation Virtual awards 2020 for Best Media Campaign.

Their decision to replace my campaign in China by using my concepts and substituting a local brand ambassador for me, without either my consent or prior notice, was wrong. The film celebrated my personal story– showcasing my hometown, including my friends and featuring my family.

While many brands understandably use a variety of global and local ambassadors , dismissively trading out one’s culture this way is not something I can condone.
